Promote 360, the SESP student organization dedicated to minority student well-being, provided the volunteer tour guides. Northwestern students guided the high school students from one building to another during the day. All of the high school students participated in a walking tour of campus. They also took a trivia quiz about Northwestern and college, given by Northwestern athletes.Īnd they got a feel for resident dining when they ate lunch at Elder Hall. They attended a talk about college and admissions offered by the admissions office. They went backstage in the theater department and met Northwestern theater students. The students also sat in on a class on culture offered by the Department of African American Studies, and they attended a writing seminar and an introductory journalism session, sponsored by Medill. And the rest of the day they attended a variety of classes and special events around campus.Īt the Technological Institute, Northwestern students talked to the ETHS students about design work. Northwestern President Morton Schapiro and ETHS Superintendent Eric Weatherspoon spoke to the group during the noon hour. The purpose of the day was “to excite high school students about campus life and encourage them to apply to college,” says Susan Ipri Brown, associate director of the Office of STEM Education Partnerships, one of the organizers of the event. Many of the high school students are the first in their family to consider attending college. One hundred Evanston Township High School sophomores got a taste of what college is like when they spent the entire day at Northwestern University during the first program.
